[englisch klɔnmək'nɔɪz], Ort in der County Offaly, Irland, am Shannon. - Die Geschichte der Siedlung wurde von der des Klosterbistums, das zwischen 544 und 548 vom heiligen Ciaran (✝ um 549) gegründet worden war, bestimmt. Clonmacnoise war eine der berühmtesten irischen Klosterstädte des Mittelalters. Das Bistum wurde 1568 mit dem von Meath vereinigt, das Kloster 1729 aufgelöst. - Von 12 Kirchen (10.-15. Jahrhundert) sind noch sieben erhalten, darunter die 904 begonnene Kathedrale (im 14. Jahrhundert erneuert); in ihrer Nähe befinden sich drei Steinkreuze (bis zu 4 m Höhe; 9., 10. und 11. Jahrhundert); Überreste einer Burg (1214) und des Bischofspalastes (13. Jahrhundert; zerstört durch O. Cromwell); zwei Rundtürme (Rundturm MacCarthy von 1124).
